Pagham

Closest to home at Barton Manor is the village of Pagham. Famous for it's nature reserve where bird spotters enjoy an abundance of birdlife. There are also many walks and cycle rides on relatively flat footpaths that criss-cross the area and wonderful views out across the Channel.

Barton Manor stands on the edge of the village of Pagham and Nyetimber. It is very difficult to say where Nyetimber ends and Pagham starts, as they merge quite perfectly and compliment each other to a tee. Closest to home at Barton Manor is the village of Pagham. Pagham

Pagham itself is well known for it's tranquil beaches and it's Nature Reserve. The coast line, and with it, the borders of Pagham, have ebbed and flowed like the sea, which shaped it, but the early village grew up and around the present Church of St Thomas A' Becket. Archaeological evidence suggests that the land of the present church was used for religious purposes as long ago as 1500 BC; Pagham was, in fact, once the ninth largest port and the fourth wealthiest parish in the Kingdom.

As you come into the village of Nyetimber and in amongst a number of thatched homes, you will find many hostelries including The Lion and The Lamb, which remain very important meeting places for the thriving village community. The Lion is a 15th Century establishment and claims to have been a haunt for smugglers with talk of a tunnel to nearby Barton Manor. The Lamb was built around 1702 and became the heart of the village with a Forge and a Malt House adjoining. Both still stand today. Behind The Lamb is Barton Manor, which is recorded as the oldest inhabited house in the Country and has its own Saxon Hall and 12th Century Chapel
